People often ask us about the origin of the name. To explain,
you must know that the Alabama Capitol Building is located
only a few blocks away from us at the head of Dexter Avenue.
Dexter Avenue is named for Andrew Dexter, one of the founders
of Montgomery. He had hopes that Montgomery would eventually
be chosen as the capital of Alabama, so he held onto a prime
piece of real estate, feeling it would be a perfect place
to construct an imposing capitol building. He was right
on all counts.
The legislature named Montgomery as the official capital
in 1846, and Dexter donated this piece of property where
he had raised goats for many years, hence the name Goat
Hill. Official attempts were made to change this local nickname
for the spot to more lofty choices such as Capitol Hill
or Lafayette Hill. They were unsuccessful, and the Capitol
is still on Goat Hill!
