Capitol Inn offers Jubilee-goers a sweet
deal
I've lived in Montgomery since 1969, so I'm always surprised
to find new places I haven't visited. I found another one
- Four Seasons Restaurant at Capitol Inn on Goldthwaite
Street downtown. It's open for breakfast and lunch Monday
through Friday. And if you go at lunch, the parking lot
is always full.
The restaurant is part of a hotel, and it's offering a
Jubilee Special. You can stay two nights for $125, which
includes shuttle service to any downtown venue, breakfast
for two, Biscuits baseball tickets and a hospitality welcome
on Friday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. That's a pretty sweet deal
for anyone staying downtown this weekend.
Four Seasons offers a different daily menu with three choices
of entrees, five choices of side dishes, two or three dessert
choices, rolls and corn bread muffins.
There's a full salad bar with fresh vegetables. Even though
salad is a waste of calories to me, I did make a swipe at
the salad bar just to give it a try. The tossed salad is
basic with a regular assortment of toppings offered. But
there is also creamy macaroni salad and a fresh tomato onion
salad that is very nice.
The day we visited, we were offered fried chicken, hamburger
steak, sausage and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, turnip greens,
niblet corn, boiled okra, lima beans, banana pudding and
dump cake. A few popular items, such as fried chicken and
mashed potatoes, repeat during the week. And the fried chicken
is excellent. It's well-seasoned and fried with a good scald
on it. I also tried the sausage and kraut. These are very
plump Polish-type sausages and were very tasty. But my favorite
item was the hamburger steak. These little beauties are
shaped by hand and cooked in caramelized onions - just great.
Friday is catfish day and according to our waitress, the
busiest day of the week. I guess I'll be visiting Friday
next time - I love catfish.
The only side dishes we skipped were the niblet corn and
boiled okra. The corn looked fairly plain and boiled okra
is always unappealing to me. The sides we did try were great,
although the mashed potatoes were too salty for me (I couldn't
believe it either). But the texture was perfect - fluffy
and creamy. I really enjoyed the lima beans. They were cooked
until they had a creamy texture - yummy. The greens had
lots of flavor without having to add any hot sauce.
Make sure to skip that third helping and save room for
dessert. Banana pudding is on the menu every day and for
good reason. It's delicious. But pudding connoisseurs take
note: The banana pudding here is meringue-topped, so it's
served warm. I'm partial to the refrigerated version but
there really isn't a bad way to make banana pudding - just
make it.
We also tried the dump cake, which is offered several times
a week. This is a simple recipe but always a hit. My recipe
calls for pie filling, crushed pineapple, cake mix and butter.
Dump it in a pan, bake it and it's terrific. I've eaten
several different versions of this cake and haven't tried
a bad one yet. The key ingredient seems to be the pineapple.
The heavy sugar content caramelizes when baked, making a
nice gooey texture.
Obviously, I'm on the short list of folks who haven't tried
this popular restaurant at Capitol Inn. If you're on the
same list, you don't know what you're missing! |
